I upgraded to windows 10 when it was first available a few months ago – only recently few days the sound on my PC has started to skip. This is true for all applications, and all sound playbacks. The skipping is less than a second, and occurs at random times 5 – 20 seconds apart.

Still skipping. I uninstalled the realtek driver to re-install it, but every time I uninstall and re-boot I find that the driver is very much still there, and the sound is still skipping.

Try installing latest drivers in compatibility mode. Compatibility mode runs the program using settings from a previous version of Windows.
